The story begins with Mavis trying to revive her writing career by ghostwriting a book for a teenage girl. However, her plans are disrupted when she reunites with her old flame, Buddy (played by Patrick Wilson), who's now married with two kids. Mavis also befriends Matt (played by Patton Oswalt), a geeky and awkward high school English teacher.
